Three Generations of the Yagyu Clan

Perhaps no clan in the history of Japanese martial arts has produced masters of the sword more skilled or influential than that of the Yagyu line. The three generations of Yagyu covered on this page represent not only the height of their family's school of swordsmanship, but the history of much of the pre- and early-Tokugawa shogunate. This research was attempted first as only the personal history of Yagyu Jubei, but it quickly became apparent, that the history of the famous, yet mysterious Jubei could only be completed successfully with a connection to the history of both his father (Munenori) and grandfather (Muneyoshi), and the natural progression of skills through family lines. A progression of skills that has lasted down to the present day, with direct line descendants still teaching and practicing the Yagyu Shinkage-ryu, the family's technique in the family's original dojo.
